Bloggers love getting people on their site, but what they love more is keeping them there and better yet getting them to take action…. This post is going to share with you how to keep and convert more readers.
Whether that’s signing up for their newsletter….
Or buying a product…..
Getting readers is one thing, converting them to subscribers, tribe members and buyers is another.
One of the ways to encourage readers to stick around and take action is to customize your site to what they want.
Customizing a reader’s experience improves your chances of keeping them on your site longer, making it more likely they will sign up for my list.
Helping them to know, like and trust you. But figuring out how to customize their experience can be tricky.
I started the course, Elite Blog Academy at the end of February 2017 when it opened up and as I going through the site redesign part of the course as well as the grow your list part, I made the decision to get a Thrive Themes membership which not only helped me to easily change the design of my site, but it’s been integral growing my email list.
Little did I know how just how much you could do with Thrive and for quite a while now I’ve been obsessed with all the functionality.
One of my favorite things about Thrive is the ability to customize my readers experience so that I keep readers on my site longer.
In this post I’m going to break down for you how easy it is to customize a reader’s site experience using Thrive Themes. Thrive makes it easy to ensure that I’m staying on topic and helping them with what they need the most help with.
SideBar Featured Posts – smart widget
With the Thrive Smart Widget, I can customize my sidebar to show content that is relevant to what the reader is interested in learning about.
For example, if the reader is on a post categorized as side hustling, my side bar displays posts I’ve chosen to feature in that category – like:
- How to start freelance writing
- The best and worst of working retail
- How to earn money with your car
I just add the widget (Under “Appearance” in your WordPress Dashboard) and choose the display settings to have it display certain popular posts when they’re looking at a certain category on my website.

It ensures that I’m showing them the most relevant and popular content related to what they’re looking at. Because if they are looking at a post about earning more money, why not show them the best earn more money post available on my website?
Lead Groups and opt-ins shown
Lead Groups are another way I’m able to customize and automate the best opt-ins being shown throughout my website.
Before Thrive I had LeadPages and I would have to go in and put in the opt-in form I’d created in LeadPages into every single post or page that I wanted it to display. This was tedious to say the least and a little annoying.
With Lead Groups I don’t have to do that. I simply set up the Lead Group for each opt-in and choose the display settings. It’s all done in one place.
For example, I have a Build Your First Successful Budget opt-in. So I created a lead group for it and choose the type of opt-in forms I wanted for the opt-in. I usually like to do an:
- in content form,
- post content form, and
- Screen filler form
for each lead group. Though there are several other types of forms you can do.
Budget Workbook Lead Group includes: In Content, Lightbox, Post Footer, and Ribbon Opt-Ins
Then I just say where and when I want the forms to show on my site.
For my personal finance site, anytime a post is categorized as budgeting it’s going to display my successful budgeting opt-in forms. Automatically. Without me having to remember to set it up when crafting the post.
This means I don’t have to worry about adding an opt-in form to every post when I’m writing. It takes one thing off my to-do list.
Thrive Ultimatum – offers for readers based on interests
Now if you’ve opted in to my list on either site you’ve probably seen a tripwire product. Which means that after you opted in, you were taken to an exclusive one time super low cost offer to buy a product at its lowest rate.
I have created a different tripwire for each content upgrade on Less Debt, More Wine. Because someone opting into the free side hustle guide probably isn’t interested in my budgeting expenses product. So the tripwire varies depending on the opt-in.
I’m able to do this using Thrive Ultimatum. It not only presents the offer, but it locks it out, so that people can’t get back to it once the time has expired. It also lets me choose when and where it’s displayed. So I make sure it’s only ever displayed when people sign up using a specified Thrivebox or Lead Group.
