5 Bad Blogging Habits to Give Up (and How)

Raise your hand if you’re not a perfect blogger. Keep it raised if you’ve developed some bad blogging habits?

Just me? Really?

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

In my 5+ years of blogging, I’ve had a tendency here and there to pick up a bad blogging habit or two, especially in the beginning.

If you are struggling with hitting your blogging goals, it could be because you’ve got some bad blogging habits working against you.

In this post, I’m going to break down 5 bad blogging habits you should aim to give up along with some tips on how to give them up.

1. Blogging Inconsistently

AKA not having a blogging habit. If there is one golden rule when it comes to successful blogging, it’s blogging consistently. I have always seen more success when I’ve been consistent. And it’s when I’ve fallen off my regular posting of content that things have started going south.

You don’t have to publish a post every day, or even every week, but whatever your posting frequency (maybe it’s just once a month) make sure it is consistent.

2. Not Emailing Your List

If you have an email list, you should be emailing them regularly, again it comes down to that golden rule of consistency.

Make sure you email your list regularly, this is easier if you have established some sort of email marketing strategy and goals you want to hit.

3. Getting Obsessed With Stats

Statistics are helpful and the data from them should definitely be used when making decisions. That being said, they shouldn’t be checked everyday- that is a sure fire way to drive yourself crazy. Not only that, but it’s a waste of time.

Try to only check your stats once a month so you can spot trends and make adjustments

4. Comparing Your Blog To Others

Theodore Roosevelt said “comparison is the thief of joy” and while I don’t think that is 100% true, I do think it applies when you start comparing your blog to others.

Chances are there are lots of other people blogging in the same space as you, but YOU are the reason your audience comes to your site.

If you start comparing your blog to others or try to be like other bloggers out there, you start to lose that very valuable asset of being yourself and attracting the right readers for you.

5. Living On A Blogging Island

No man (or woman) is an island, we aren’t meant to be by ourselves and we won’t find success by keeping to ourselves either.

My blog and business has seen its biggest leaps of growth when I collaborate and work with others.

Similarly, I’ve gotten clarity and direction by talking to other bloggers as part of a mastermind. A mastermind can be a great way to get out of your head and make strong decisions with your blog.

The truth is that sometimes, we as bloggers, are too close to the issue and it takes an outside perspective to help us see what we should be doing.

Bottom Line on Blogging Habits

If you’ve been having trouble hitting your blogging goals, some bad blogging habits like these may be to blame:

  • Blogging inconsistently
  • Not emailing your list
  • Obsessing over stats
  • Comparing yourself to others
  • Not collaborating and reaching out
